North Dakota’s largest rummage sale event June 11-12
Start saving your quarters! The state’s largest rummage sale event, the ninth annual Highway 21 Treasure Hunt, is set for June 11 and 12.
“With approximately 100 rummage sales over the 100-mile route, this is the largest rummage sale event in North Dakota and possibly the Upper Midwest,” says coordinator Luann Dart, Elgin.
During the event, communities along Highway 21 in southwestern North Dakota host citywide rummage sales along Highway 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT June 11-12.
Participating communities include St. Anthony, Flasher, Carson, Elgin, New Leipzig, Mott, Regent and New England. Rural residents will be holding sales, too, so watch for signs along the route. More than 100 sales are planned during the event, which has grown each year.
“Anyone who loves rummage sales and is looking for a bargain needs to attend this event,” Dart says.
Listings for each community’s sales will be available at certain locations in that community, such as restaurants or gas stations. This year, you’ll find listings at:
• St. Anthony/Flasher: Fitterer Oil and Gas, Highway 21 Cafe and PJ’s Farm Supply
• Carson: A&S Country Market and Titan Gas and Grill
• Elgin: Our Place Cafe and Reiny’s Drive-In
• New Leipzig: Star Grocery
• Mott: Pheasant Cafe
• Regent: Cenex
• New England: Community Grocery Store, Alliance Ag Cenex Station and Western Edge Cafe and Lanes
Visitors can also register to win $100 during the sale at these locations. At the end of the event, one name will be drawn from among the registration slips to win $100.
“This is the only event of its kind in North Dakota and it really is fun to travel the route and browse all the sales in each community,” Dart says. “You’ll find all kinds of treasures and have fun, too!”
The event began eight years ago as a cooperative effort by the participating communities to bring tourists into the area. Hundreds of visitors from across the state drive the route each year.
A small group of volunteers from each community spearheads the event each year and advertising expenses are paid with donations from local, civic-minded organizations.
“This year, take a trip along Highway 21 and have some fun during the Highway 21 Treasure Hunt,” Dart says.

It has been along process and has slipped many area residents’ minds but the wind farm slated for the area has crossed another hurdle recently. Crownbutte Wind Power, Inc. announced that the 20 MW wind project near Elgin has been fast-tracked through the current system planning and analysist phase of the interconnection queue to the final Definitive Planning Phase. This fast-track puts the wind project to the last stage of the process.
